I haven't dusted off the soap box in a while and tonight I find it appropriate to do so because quite frankly, people are fucking retarded. Let me reiterate that for the importance it holds to this post.
People are fucking retarded.
In modern America, where democracy has been replaced with theocracy, people seem to forget that our "inalienable rights" work both ways. Almost every day I hear people say "you have to vote" or "you have to believe in God". Well, let me make something clear: our "inalienable rights" to vote and religion are choices we are allowed as citizens of this country. Just as we can choose to vote, or choose our religious affiliations, we can also choose not to acknowledge those rights.
If I'd rather stay home and jerk off than go to the polls and vote for some politician who is really nothing more than a face for the masses, then you better believe I'm going to the pharmacy to stock up on Kleenex and Jergens. At least when I'm done beating my meat I'll have something to show for it. The same applies to religious choice. If I'd rather acknowledge scientific method and apply my energy to ideas and laws that are proven and subject to change when evidence allows than go to some church and pray to an invisible man by whatever name he is known, then you better believe that by proselytizing me you are wasting your fucking breath and your fucking time.
Just because you believe in an invisible man and fear for your afterlife does not mean I give two shits or a flying fuck about the tenets of your religious philosophy. People become so caught up in their philosophies they find it impossible to acknowledge the possibility that not everyone believes what they do. Shocking, I know. The thought that not everybody is in fear of this invisible man that you fear, or acknowledge the idea of a soul or potential afterlife, is absolutely unheard of. Well, let me break this down for you as concisely as I can.
Inside the human body there is this system we call the "central nervous system" that is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. The central nervous system governs the nervous system, which carries electrical impulses throughout the body. These electrical impulses are what govern both voluntary and involuntary actions of the body. The basis of everything on this ball of dirt floating around in space, and life in general, is energy. Not an immortal soul, not some higher being that has predetermined our lives, energy. Now if you think back to high school science, energy cannot be created or destroyed, it is simply transferred. So when somebody dies and their carcass is tossed in the ground, that body breaks down and becomes food for worms, insects, and other creatures. The waste that breaks down from that process is then used to create energy that is absorbed by the earth and taken in by plants, which then create oxygen from sunlight.
Back to the body and this concept of an immortal soul. So much argument is made that the soul is what gives us emotion, this is also blatantly incorrect. The human brain exists in tiers of consciousness as a result of our evolutionary development. We have a reptilian brain, which controls primal basic survival processes such as heart rate, breathing, etc. It is also rigid and compulsive. There is the primal, or limbic brain, which emerged in the earliest mammals and records memories of both pleasant and unpleasant experiences. It's how we learn and remember what is dangerous and what is safe in our day to day life; like walking in front of a bus for example. Lastly, there is the neocortex which first surfaced in humans and higher mammals. The neocortex is the most complex of the brain tiers and has infinite learning ability. This is where human imagination, language, and abstract thought come from. It is also where emotions are generated from. These are the centers of what is perceived by religions as "higher power". It isn't divinity, it's evolution.
So the next time you want to shove a load of religious bullshit down a stranger, or co-worker's throat, watch an episode or two of Bill Nye the Science Guy and use that fucking neocortex of yours for once rather than being quick to spread your stupidity to others who actually have the mental capacity to generate an intelligent thought. Or since you've probably chosen to ignore the logic centers of your limbic brain, just step in front of the next speeding bus that passes down your street. I'll gain some level of satisfaction from it regardless.
Love,
